 areroot
plants in dormant condition appear lifeless. Consequently, they
are merely resting while the energy and vitality is stored in the branches and
roots to provide new life, foliage and blooms. The plants are ready to
come to life once planted, watered and subject to the warmth of sun and soil.
Sherman Nursery Company has over 118 years of experience serving our
nationwide customers. During this time we have been fortunate to be a part of
many new and exciting changes and improvements within our industry. Because
the quality of our products and services is a top priority, we put valuable

Advantages of bareroot nursery stock:
-
Bareroot
nursery stock can be purchased and planted early in the season- as soon
as frost has left the ground. In some cases, this means bareroot
planting can take place up to one month sooner than potted plants.
-
Bareroot
nursery stock is economical. Light in weight, it requires less
freight and shipping costs.
-
Bareroot
stock is simple to plant and care for.
Sherman Nursery's container production is
on the grow...
We
currently have 20 acres of container trees and shrubs ranging in sizes from #1
to #25 pots. Roughly 8,000-10,000 trees, 100,000 shrubs and
20,000 perennials are potted annually. In addition, container facilities
were recently updated to better serve our customers. Completed the Fall of
1999, our 80x130 container processing building enhances product containerizing
and shipping. Many of our customers prefer established container plant
material because of its quick turnover. We are able to provide container
plants throughout the growing season for customers to pick up as needed. We
also make "Sherman Express" deliveries into Iowa and surrounding
states.
Sherman's Seasonal
Container Care
We
implement the following procedures to produce quality container plants for our
customers:
Winter prep: Plants
are covered with sudan and plastic to winterize.
Spring prep:
Trees are potted early spring, then shrubs. Container plants are uncovered,
top-dressed with fertilizer, and spaced in a 1/15 set up. Herbicide is
applied for weed control.
Summer prep:
(end of June) as necessary, plants are moved up in container size for the
next selling season. Plants are pruned.
Sherman's Pot-In-Pot
production
Approximately 10,000 trees are in pot-in-pot
production. As pictured, container
trees are housed in an in-ground container. The benefits of this type of
container production include:
- Trees are protected from the wind.
- Root systems are insulated from
temperature extremes.
- Trees can be purchased through summer
into late fall.
- It is believed that this method of
production produces
a salable tree faster.
